An Azerbaijan-born artist, Lev Davidov currently resides in West Bloomfield, Michigan. This sculpture, called "Inner Sanctum", is his largest sculpture to-date and stands approximately 7 feet tall by 32 inches wide. Inner Sanctum is hand-crafted with mixed media, including a variety of natural hardwoods, glass, tile, stone, Swarovski crystals, and vintage found objects. Davidov took time to design and create this sculpture, working only when driven by pure inspiration over a period of five years. He describes this as a meditative process, passionate about the experience as a way to celebrate his life.
Davidov, a Soviet Jew, came to the United States in 1978 as a refugee along with his wife and three daughters. As he resettled in a new country, he held tight to his heritage and with the assistance of the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS) established a home within a predominantly Jewish community in Michigan. This community support helped strengthen his faith and his roots, and is the true inspiration for Inner Sanctum.
